Hundreds of Metropolitan Detroit Area Pastors Unite

on the Definition of Marriage and Encourage a YES vote on Proposal 2

(October 12, 2004)  Amidst demonstrations from the opposition outside, hundreds of metropolitan Detroit area pastors from both the city and the suburbs gathered together at the Fox Theater this morning in a show of unity over the definition of marriage as the union of one man and one woman.  “Unfortunately, the church is divided over many issues, but this one is clear.  Marriage is a sacred institution created by God,” declared Christian Television Network Chairman/CEO, Pastor Glenn Plummer.

More than three hundred Detroit area pastors have endorsed an “Open Letter to the Citizens of Michigan” declaring that marriage is the union of one man and one woman.  Following the formal signing of the letter, several pastors spoke to the issue, encouraging voters to vote YES on Proposal 2.   “Marriage is the foundation of our families, and ultimately the foundation of society.  Intact families produce a strong nation.  As pastors we spend most of our time restoring the lives of people who have dealt with the scars of broken families,” explained Pastor J. Drew Sheard, pastor of Greater Emmanuel Institutional C.O.G. I. C., “We must stand up for what we know to be right for the people and best for our children.”

Continuing in this sentiment, Pastor Marvin L. Winans commented, “We know that news media and political jargon can confuse the people.  But we, the Church, are not confused.  The Word of God is clear about the sanctity and unique union between a man and his wife. “

This is an issue where politics and religion intersect,” says Citizens for the Protection of Marriage spokesperson Kristina Hemphill, “This issue is about voting your values.”

One attendee commented, “I’m so glad some of our pastors still read the Bible.”
